Neil Gaiman Confirms That Netflix's THE SANDMAN Series Will Be Set in 2021

During a recent interview with Neil Gaiman last week, he explained that Netflix’s The Sandman story was being updated for the 21st century. When previously talking about developing the series, Gaiman explained:

“We're very much looking at that as going, 'Okay, it is 2020, let's say that I was doing Sandman starting in 2020, what would we do? How would we change things? What gender would this character be? Who would this person be? What would be happening?'“

In a new interview with Digital Spy, Gaiman confirmed that the show’s storyline will be set in 2021. He explains:

“We’re working with Netflix, we were meant to start shooting at the end of May. Given this COVID world, everything is on pause. The Netflix version is going to begin in 2021, so Morpheus will have been kept prisoner in the Netflix version for 105 years rather than 70 years.

He goes on to tease:

“We’ll take that one, see what that does. It’s already in the scripts, it does interesting things because… if we were creating this character now, what gender would the character be?”

So, it sounds like we can expect some interesting changes and surprises from this series. It’ll also be interesting to see how the fans react to these changes, once they are revealed.

Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman, The Catch, Grey's Anatomy) is writing the show and will also serve as showrunner. The Sandman comic series was originally created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, but it wasn't until Gaiman came along and gave us his version of the comic that it really exploded.

The story focuses on Morpheus, the Lord of the Dreaming, a deity who personifies dreams. Gaiman also introduced the Endless, a group of powerful brothers and sisters named Destiny, Death, Destruction, Despair, Desire, and Delirium (as well as Dream).

Are you open to the big changes that will be coming to The Sandman Netflix series?
