Neil Gaiman's GOOD OMENS Series Anticipating Season 3 Renewal - Also in Search of New Showrunner

Writer Neil Gaiman’s adapted series Good Omens is looking good for a Season 3 renewal at Amazon and BBC. Deadline reports that the fantasy series is in anticipation of the order, which will likely be the show’s last chapter. The options on the series’ main cast, led by Michael Sheen and David Tennant, have been picked up, sources said.

Douglas Mackinnon, who served as executive producer, director and co-showrunner on the first two seasons, will not be returning for Season 3. Mackinnon revealed his departure from Good Omens on Instagram. Answering an ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike-related challenge to film/TV professionals to post a photo of themselves on the job, he ran an image from the set of the Prime Video/BBC Two series.

While he did not identify the production, fans recognized the set and started a Good Omens discussion in the comments section to which Mackinnon responded, “I’m not involved with this show anymore.”

Mackinnon’s statement lead a fan to ask series creator, executive producer and co-showrunner Gaiman about the director’s status on the Bluesky platform. His answer: “Douglas has moved on to other projects.”

While the news of Mackinnon’s exit also raised concerns about Good Omens‘ future, Season 3 is still very likely. Gaiman responded to a fan question on X about hope for Season 3, saying, “It’s planned and plotted and if there wasn’t a Writers Strike on I’d be writing it right now.”

Gaiman, who in addition to creating the TV series co-authored with Terry Pratchett the novel Good Omens was based on, has indicated that Season 3 would draw from the duo’s unfinished sequel to their book. That is expected to bring the story to its conclusion as Gaiman also has addressed the future of the show beyond Season 3, responding to another fan’s question on Tumblr, by saying, “No, there won’t be an S4.”
