Neill Blomkamp Wants to Make a Sequel To ELYSIUM, He Says He Can Do a Better Job

Neill Blomkamp made a big splash with District 9. Fans loved it! He followed that up with the Matt Damon sci-fi movie Elysium, which wasn't received as well by audiences or critics. I actually kind of liked the movie. Yeah, it wasn't as good as District 9, but it was still an enjoyable film with a decent story.

Well, Blomkamp wants to make a sequel to Elysium because he thinks he can do a better job the second time around. It seems as though maybe he wasn't completely satisfied himself with the movie. He'd like to explore some of the themes from the first film more in the sequel.

While talking to ScreenRant, Blomkamp explains why he wants to make an Elysium sequel saying:

“Elysium is more something I feel like I could have done better. I think that if you were to take something like Elysium and play with it inside a setting like this [his Oats Studios short films] you probably would hone it – you would end up, I think, with something well thought through and that has all of the thematic elements that I wanted. I still love the set up to Elysium. The idea of the separation of class warfare presented with this space ring is incredibly appealing to me and I would love to go back and make another movie in the world of Elysium because it’s compelling. I just think I can do a better job in setting up what the themes are more clearly and what the character’s motivations are. I can do it better, I think.”

One of the things I liked most about Elysium was the world that it was set in. There is so much to explore in it. If Blomkamp thinks he can make another film set in that world that is better than the first one I'd watch it. I seriously doubt it will happen, and I'd much rather see Blomkamp make a new film that tells an original story anyway.

What do you think about Blomkamp wanting to make an Elysium sequel?
