NEON GENESIS EVANGELION Reborn: Yoko Taro Unveils First Teaser for All-New Anime Series
The world of Neon Genesis Evangelion is about to crack open again.
During the Evangelion:30+ anniversary event in Yokohama, Japan, fans got hit with huge news with the announcement that a brand-new Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series is officially in the works.
The anime is being billed as a completely original project, separate from the previous TV series and films. Even better, it’s being written and composed by none other than Yoko Taro, the visionary mind behind NieR: Automata.
According to Verity Townsend at Verity, this new Evangelion series is a collaboration between Hideaki Anno’s Studio Khara and CloverWorks. The announcement dropped during a massive three-day celebration marking the franchise’s 30th anniversary.
The event featured exhibitions, panels, a kabuki adaptation, and even a new 15-minute short centered on Asuka Langley. But the biggest reveal was this all-new chapter in the Evangelion saga.
Townsend reports that the anime is being promoted as a completely original series, standing apart from previous adaptations and films. That alone makes this one of the most intriguing anime announcements of the year.
Joining Taro are director Kazuya Tsurumaki, who helmed the Rebuild of Evangelion films, and Toko Yatabe, a key animator from the Rebuild series. On the music side, Keiichi Okabe, known for his work on NieR, Drakengard, and Tekken, will compose the score.
After the announcement, Taro took to X and kept it simple, writing: “It’s been announced! I’ll do my best!” in response to Studio Khara’s post.
For some context, the original Neon Genesis Evangelion series aired from 1995 to 1996 and became a global phenomenon. It reshaped the mecha genre and sparked endless analysis thanks to its psychological depth and apocalyptic themes. In 1997, The End of Evangelion offered an alternate conclusion that still gets debated today.
Then came the Rebuild of Evangelion film series, released between 2007 and 2021. The saga wrapped up with Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, which pulled in over 10 billion yen at the Japanese box office and delivered what many fans saw as a definitive farewell.
Meanwhile, the franchise’s original studio, Gainax, was liquidated last December following scandals and legal issues involving Studio Khara. Anno described the closure as a “truly disappointing end.” It marked the end of an era, but clearly not the end of Evangelion itself.
Now, with Studio Khara steering the ship and Yoko Taro shaping the narrative, this next evolution feels unpredictable. Taro is known for existential themes, morally complex characters, and stories that don’t play it safe. Evangelion has always thrived in that space.
The teaser itself is still light on story details, but the mere fact that this is an entirely new continuity opens up wild possibilities.
Whatever form it takes, Neon Genesis Evangelion is reinventing itself again.
