Netflix Adds Six More Anime Creators to Their Roster

Last year, Netflix teamed up with anime creators including Production I.G, bones, anima, David Production, and Sublimation. Now, in an effort to double-down on their production of anime content, they’ve created deals with six more: CLAMP (Cardcaptor Sakura), Shin Kibayashi (The Kindaichi Case Files), Yasuo Ohtagaki (Mobile Suit Gundam: Thunderbolt), Otsuichi (Goth), Tow Ubukata (Mardock Scramble), and Mari Yamazaki (Thermae Romae).

Taiki Sakurai of Netflix released the following statement:

We’re excited to work with these extraordinary creators to bring best in class anime to Netflix. These partnerships are part of our broader investment strategy to support Japanese anime – giving creators the ability to tell bold, innovative stories and giving them access to fans all around the world, because storytelling is boundless in the world of anime.

Ohtagaki is really excited about the prospect of working with Netflix:

As a creator, it is such an honor to be given this opportunity to reach a global audience. From my homeground in Japanese manga into the global major leagues — it is a thrilling time for me to believe in my craft, and aim for new heights.

Kibayashi added his excitement about be able to present his work to a more global audience:

It is rewarding to be part of a Netflix show that reaches audiences worldwide as a Japanese creator. I am thrilled to be working on entirely new characters, worlds and storylines.

I do really enjoy that Netflix is going all-in on the anime front and it looks like they’re starting to look at off-screen options as well. According to Deadline, these new creators will not only create shows and films for Netflix, but they’re also looking at the possibilities of off-screen options through publishing and other products. I’m hoping this means we’ll get some cool new manga to go along with some of the anime that the streaming service is making. Toys are always a given with new shows, but I’m most excited about that publishing part. I love exploring properties through books and comics in addition to the on-screen elements.
