Netflix and Legendary Announce New KING KONG and TOMB RAIDER Anime Shows
Netflix and Legendary are teaming up to produce two new anime series based on popular franchises. They will be developing a show based on King Kong that will be titled Skull Island, and they are also developing a show based around Lara Croft, which will be titled Tomb Raider.
Skull Island will center around a shipwrecked crew who find themselves stranded on an island that happens to be the home of the giant monstrous ape, King Kong. The official description for the Kong anime reds:
A new chapter in Legendary’s Monsterverse franchise, Skull Island is a thrilling animated adventure series that follows shipwrecked characters desperate to escape the most dangerous place on Earth—a mysterious island home to prehistoric monsters, including the greatest titan of them all, Kong.
The series will also be written by Brian Duffield, who wrote the popular sci-fi movies Underwater and The Babysitter.
Tomb Raider will follow the adventures of Lara Croft after the events of the video game reboot trilogy. This is the description that was shared for the Tomb Raider anime:
Lara Croft, one of the video game world’s most iconic adventurers, makes her anime debut in an all-new series. Picking up after the events of the highly successful Tomb Raider video-game reboot trilogy, the animated series will chart the globetrotting heroine’s latest, greatest adventure. Twenty-five years after her first game appeared, Lara continues to explore new territory.
Netflix has hired Tasha Huo to write and executive produce the series. Dmitri M. Johnson, Stephan Bugaj, Howard Bliss, and Jacob Robinson will also oversee the series as producers.
The anime will be produced byPowerhouse Animation Studio, who are responsible for the popular animated series on the streaming service including Castlevania, Seis Manos, and Blood of Zeus.
