Netflix Cancels Its Animated Adaptation of the WINGS OF FIRE Fantasy Book Series
Netflix has been canceling a ton of projects recently due to that $54 billion hit it took a few weeks ago. Well, another project has been canceled, and that project is the animated adaptation of the family fantasy book series Wings of Fire.
This was a big project for the streaming service and director Ava DuVernay (Naomi, DMZ, A Wrinkle in Time) was developing the project. The streaming service previously greenlit ten 40-minute episodes and DuVernay was executive producing through her ARRAY Filmworks and Warner Bros. Animation.
The story came from author Tui T. Sutherland and it centers around “a bitter war that has raged for generations between the dragon tribes who inhabit the epic world of Pyrrhia. According to prophecy, five young dragons will rise to end the bloodshed and bring peace back to the land. Raised and trained in secret from the time they were hatched, the Dragonets of destiny – Clay, Tsunami, Glory, Starflight, and Sunny – embark on an evolving quest that will bring them face to face with their true selves and the overwhelming scope of this savage war they are destined to bring to an end.”
Dan Milano (Robot Chicken, Greg the Bunny, Warren the Ape) and Christa Starr (Mystery Science Theater 3000) were adapting Wings of Fire and served as showrunners and executive producers with Justin Ridge (Star Wars Resistance) Sutherland, and Sam Register.
A lot of people were excited about this project! It seriously could have been a great series and maybe there’s still hope for it at another streaming service at some point.
This news was shared with me from a source close to the production.
