Netflix Cancels THE WATERFRONT After Just One Season Despite Dominating the Charts -Creator Kevin Williamson Responds

The Waterfront made waves when it dropped on Netflix, quickly climbing to the top spot and holding strong for weeks. But despite its chart-topping debut and loyal audience, the streamer has decided to pull the plug on the crime drama after just one season.

Created by Kevin Williamson, the mastermind behind Scream and The Vampire Diaries, The Waterfront told the gripping story of the Buckley family, who rule the fictional town of Havenport, North Carolina. As their once-powerful fishing empire starts to crumble, they’re forced to dive into the criminal underworld to survive.

The series starred Holt McCallany, Jake Weary, Melissa Benoist, and Maria Bello, with Topher Grace appearing in a guest role.

The show premiered on June 19 and quickly gained traction. It spent five weeks on Netflix’s global top 10 list, including three weeks sitting at number one. In its first full week, it racked up 11.6 million views. But as many Netflix fans know, chart success doesn’t always guarantee a second season.

News of the cancellation broke Monday evening, and Williamson took to Instagram to share his thoughts. Alongside a behind the scenes photo featuring McCallany and Grace, he expressed appreciation for the experience and all who helped bring the show to life.

"A big thank you to everyone who watched The Waterfront. While I'm sad the Buckleys won't be back for a season 2, I'm celebrating the joy that was season 1.”

"I had the pleasure of working with a dream cast and crew. My heart is full of gratitude for all the people who brought their talents to the show both in NC and LA," he continued.

"You were all amazing. Thank you to my partners at Universal TV. And thank you to Netflix for taking a chance on a very personal story. You were truly a joy to work with! It was one of the best experiences of my life! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you."

This cancellation adds to a growing list of recently axed Netflix projects, including Dead Boy Detectives, the Sandman spin-off, and Kaos, which starred Jeff Goldblum.

For now, fans will have to settle for just one season of The Waterfront, a great short-lived series, and it’s a shame that we won’t get a second season.
