Creepy Trailer For Netflix's THE CONJURING: UNSPOKEN Game From The Team Behind UNTIL DAWN
Halloween is creeping closer, and Netflix has a pretty fun surprise lined up for horror fans. The streamer has unveiled the trailer for The Conjuring: Unspoken, the first standalone video game based on The Conjuring franchise, and it comes from a studio that knows its way around interactive horror.
Supermassive Games, the British developer behind Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures Anthology, and The Quarry, is developing the interactive narrative horror game, which launches exclusively through Netflix on October 13.
The Conjuring: Unspoken first appeared in Netflix's October lineup back in September, but at the time, there wasn't much beyond a title and basic premise. The new reveal offers a much better idea of what players will be doing as they investigate a nasty supernatural situation inside an old English inn.
The story follows demonologist Francesca Noakes, who travels to the centuries-old Red Lion Inn in England to investigate a string of disturbing events surrounding the Cooper family.
The family has recently lost their mother and arrives at the inn carrying plenty of grief with them. It doesn't take long for things to get creepy. Dolls begin disappearing, one of the daughters hears her dead mother's voice at night, and a ballerina music box starts playing on its own. Things get considerably worse after a séance goes wrong.
Francesca eventually discovers that the Cooper family has been targeted by Vinea, a demon that feeds on grief, along with Florrie, a ghost pulled from English folklore.
Netflix describes the game as an "interactive paranormal investigation," with players searching the Red Lion Inn for clues, examining supernatural activity, and deciding how Francesca responds during conversations. Those dialogue choices can affect the direction of the story, which fits right into Supermassive's wheelhouse.
One of the more interesting aspects of The Conjuring: Unspoken is how it uses your TV and smartphone together. The game itself plays out on the big screen, while your phone becomes both the controller and Francesca's paranormal investigation kit.
Players can switch between several ghost-hunting tools while exploring the inn. An electromagnetic field reader detects paranormal activity, an infrared camera provides a thermal view and can uncover cold spots, and a spirit box allows Francesca to attempt communication with apparitions.
For longtime horror fans, The Conjuring: Unspoken marks the first standalone game based on The Conjuring franchise, which began with director James Wan's 2013 supernatural horror movie. The series has since grown to include four mainline films as well as spin-offs such as Annabelle and The Nun.
You won't need to know the movies to play the game, either. Netflix says newcomers can jump straight into Francesca's investigation without knowing the larger mythology.
Fans who have followed the franchise will get a few extras, though, as Netflix confirms that "a few familiar faces" will appear, with their histories providing additional context for players who already know The Conjuring universe.
The Conjuring: Unspoken is now viloable to play exclusively on Netflix. If you've ever watched The Conjuring and thought investigating one of its haunted locations yourself sounded like a good idea, this is probably the closest you'll want to get.
