Netflix Has Won the Bidding War For Lin Manuel-Miranda's Musical Adaptation of TiICK, TICK... BOOM!

After what was reported to have been a heated bidding war, Netflix won out on the rights to the musical Tick, Tick… Boom!, originally a stage play by Jonathan Larson, creator of the beloved Broadway musical Rent. The play is being adapted into musical by Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen) and is being directed by Hamilton creator, Lin Manuel-Miranda. Variety reports the following synopsis:

“Tick, Tick… Boom!” is set in 1990 and tells the story of Jon, an aspiring theater composer who is waiting tables in New York City while writing Superbia — which he hopes will be the next great American musical and finally give him his big break. Jon is also feeling pressure from his girlfriend Susan, who is tired of continuing to put her life on hold for Jon’s career aspirations. Meanwhile, his best friend and roommate Michael, has given up on his creative aspirations for a high paying advertising job on Madison Avenue and is about to move out. As Jon approaches his 30th birthday, he is overcome with anxiety — wondering if his dream is worth the cost.

This will be Miranda’s directorial debut, and is a perfect fit for the Broadway star, as he has cited Larson as a major inspiration of his in the past. The film version of Miranda’s Broadway hit In the Heights is currently in production.

Andrew Garfield is being looked at to star in Tick, Tick… Boom!, and nothing has been said for sure, but we will probably see a 2021 release date. I’m a huge fan of Lin Manuel-Miranda as well as Jonathon Larson, so I am super excited for this. Garfield would just be the icing on the cake!
