Netflix in Early Talks for a KPOP DEMON HUNTERS Sequel After Breaking Streaming Records
Looks like the demon-slaying K-pop idols of KPop Demon Hunters might be gearing up for another encore. Netflix is reportedly in early talks to develop a sequel to its breakout animated musical hit, which just became the streamer’s most-watched movie of all time.
Deadline confirmed the news, though Netflix isn’t officially commenting just yet.
Since its premiere, the anime-inspired movie, produced by Sony Pictures Animation, has racked up a massive 236 million views, pushing it past Red Notice to claim the top spot on Netflix’s all-time Most Popular English Films list.
That milestone follows a strong box office showing from the film’s sing-along version, which premiered in theaters this past weekend. It claimed the number one spot with an estimated $19.2 million, marking the first time a Netflix movie has topped the box office. The sing-along version then dropped on the streaming platform at midnight Sunday, fueling even more hype.
Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, KPop Demon Hunters follows Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), three young K-pop idols in a girl group called Huntr/x. But when they're not on stage, they're fulfilling their ancient family legacy as demon hunters.
Things go off the rails when their arch-nemesis (Lee Byung-hun) launches a rival demon-possessed boy band aimed at literally stealing the souls of their fans.
With the film’s blend of stylish and cool animation, supernatural action, and addictive music, it’s no surprise Netflix is eager to keep the momentum going. Given the franchise potential, it’s probably just a matter of time before fans hear an official announcement.
With how popular and successful this film has become, of course Netflix is going to want to capitalize on it. If I were Sony Pictures Animation I would ditch Netflix and take the sequel straight to the big screen.
For now, we’ll be watching closely and hoping Huntr/x hits the stage again soon.
