Netflix Producing a Film Based on the True Story of a Grandma Who Accidentally Invited a Stranger to Thanksgiving Dinner
Netflix is producing a film based on the true story about a a grandma in Arizona who mistakenly invited a stranger to her Thanksgiving dinner. The who thing started out as an accidental text message, which led to a amusing conversation, and the whole thing went viral on social media.
This accidental text created an unlikely friendship between the two and a heartwarming holiday tradition. They have been having Thanksgiving dinner with each other over the past six years. Now Netflix is turning this whole experience into an inspirational, feel-good feature film.
The movie will be titled The Thanksgiving Text, and it will tell the story of Wanda Dench, who “thought she was texting her grandson to check if he would be coming over for Turkey Day. Apparently, she had the wrong cell phone number. She actually texted Jamal Hinton, a high school senior at the time, who accepted her invitation anyway — and has attended her feast every year since.”
Over the years, Hinton and Dench have taken to social media to give updates about their friendship and Dench has since extended the invitation to Hinton’s girlfriend and his family to partake in the yearly festivities. Hinton and Dench are excited about the film and shared on social media:
“We are excited to share our story with the world. We hope it inspires more people to reach out and make connections that they wouldn’t ordinarily make. We are so blessed to find a genuine friendship brought together by God from a mistaken text message.”
The screenplay for the film is being written by Abdul Williams (Salt-N-Pepa, The Bobby Brown Story), but as of right now, Netflix has not set a director, and no one has been cast.
