Netflix Is Developing a Series Adaptation of Jane Austen's PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

Netflix is developing a new series adaptation of Jane Austen’s iconic novel Pride and Prejudice, and it’s being scripted by Everything I Know About Love creator Dolly Alderton.

If the project gets the official greenlight, it will be Netflix’s first Austen adaptation since 2022’s Persuasion, which starred Dakota Johnson.

Pride and Prejudice is set in early 19th-century England, and the story centered around Elizabeth Bennet, the intelligent and spirited second daughter of the Bennet family.

In the story, Elizabeth navigates issues of marriage, morality, and societal expectations, especially regarding her family’s modest means and the pressure to find a suitable match.

Elizabeth’s strong will and independence often conflict with societal norms, as exemplified by her evolving relationship with the wealthy and initially distant Mr. Darcy.

The novel also explores the dynamics within the Bennet family, as well as the relationships of other key characters. Throughout the story, Austen offers social commentary on class, wealth, and marriage, critiquing the constraints placed on women during the period.

This novel has been adapted several times over the years including the 2005 movie with Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen and the BBC’s version starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle.

Netflix obviously feels that they can create a new adaptation that will breathe new life into the story for its streaming audience.
