Netflix Is Making a Live-Action YU YU HAKUSHO Series

Back when I was an intern for GeekTyrant, I helped compile a list of anime that we thought could be great live-action movies. A couple of our honorable mentions have actually happened, and now one of our picks is actually happening with a twist.

Yu Yu Hakusho was our winner for the Supernatural category, and Netflix recently announced that they’re working on developing a live-action series adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho. That’s right, instead of a film, we’re getting a series.

Now, it would be really easy for this to go wrong, but I’m staying cautiously optimistic about this one. Turning it into a series rather than a movie should definitely help to some degree, right? I do hope that they listen to my advice, though, and make sure to use prosthetics and makeup for the demons instead of CG. I know that Hiei’s Jagan Eye is probably going to be horrendous CG, but one can hope they’re wrong.

If you’re not familiar with the amazing anime and manga series, Yu Yu Hakusho was created by Yoshihiro Togashi. Here’s a brief synopsis from VIZ Media:

Yusuke Urameshi was a tough teen delinquent until one selfless act changed his life...by ending it. When he died saving a little kid from a speeding car, the afterlife didn't know what to do with him, so it gave him a second chance at life. Now, Yusuke is a ghost with a mission, performing good deeds at the beshest of Botan, the spirit guide of the dead, and Koenma, her pacifier-sucking boss from the "other side." But what strange things await him on the borderline between life and death?

I love Yu Yu Hakusho and hope that this adaptation is good. What do you think of the news? Who do you think they should get to direct and star in it?
