Netflix Is Now Tracking the Physical Activity of Some of Its Users

Some of us watch Netflix while we fold clothes and do chores, some of us have it on in the background while we exercise or do work, and some of us have shows we binge mindlessly while we lay on the couch and play on our phones. No matter what the status of our activity level is, not many of us would probably say we are at our most active while watching shows and movies on the streaming service, so tracking our activity level seems… strange and unnecessary. But apparently it’s for a good cause.

Last week, this android user noticed that Netflix asked permission to track their physical activity. Check it out:

So when they saw this tweet, thenextweb sent a message to Netflix and asked what the deal was. Netflix replied:

We are continually testing ways to give our members a better experience. This was part of a test to see how we can improve video playback quality when a member is on the go. Only some accounts are in the test, and we don’t currently have plans to roll it out.

All right, I guess that makes sense. Some people may be watching while on public transit, in a rideshare, while working out, or other “on the go” situations. I’m not mad at it, I just know they’d probably have more sedentary results from my tracker that wouldn’t be as useful.

What about you? Do you often watch Netflix on the go?
