Netflix Is Optimizing So You Use Less Data And Get A Better Picture
The king of streaming is once again showing why it deserves its top spot. The Verge is reporting Netflix will soon be launching its re-encoded service, which will feature 20% less data use and a higher picture quality than we currently have. For those of us who aren't tech savvy, it's all good, what more could you need to know?
I'm sure someone with a lot more knowledge than I could get super technical about all this, but here's the gist: the quality of what you see will be levied to what you are watching. Using the maximum streaming ability is fully necessary on Beasts of No Nation, but not at all for a late '90s episode of The Powerpuff Girls.
One double edged sword to all of this is that it's all happening through an automated encoding process. That means while the optimization algorithm may work perfectly for some series, it may take user comments on others to bring things to the attention of the company so that it can be manually done or reworked on an individual basis.
