Netflix is Releasing 3 Original Films to Theaters in Hopes of Winning Some Oscars

Netflix has decided to air three of its original films in theaters before they’re available to stream. What all of these films have in common is that they’re all potential Oscar winners. The films are Roma, a Spanish-language drama from Alfonso Cuaron; The Ballad of Buster Scruggs from Joel and Ethan Coen; and Susanne Bier’s sci-fi drama, Bird Box, starring Sandra Bullock.

This is an interesting development as Netflix has been known to fight with theaters and film festivals. However, Scott Stubber, head of Netflix’s film group, has said that the streaming giant is ready for change.

These upcoming engagements are following the success of our theatrical and Netflix releases of Private Life and 22 July. Netflix’s priority is our members and our filmmakers, and we are constantly innovating to serve them.

Roma will be hitting theaters for three weeks starting on November 21, 2018, but you’ll only be able to see it in New York, Los Angeles, and Mexico until it expands to more theaters and streaming on December 14, 2018. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and Bird Box will only be in theaters for one week each on November 8 and December 13, respectively. Do these movies stand a chance at winning a small statue?
