Netflix Releases a Full Trailer For Their Live-Action DEATH NOTE Film
We've got a new trailer for Netflix's film adaptation of the hit manga/anime series Death Note. The movie comes from director Adam Wingard (The Guest, You're Next) and if you keep an open mind it looks like a movie some fans might enjoy. I'm a big fan of Wingard's film work and I think it looks like he did a solid job with the film.
The manga was created by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, and the story follows student Light Turner, played by Nat Wolff in the film, who uncovers a mysterious notebook that kills people if their name is written in it. When talking about adapting the property into a live-action film, Wingard said:
“I think anime are due for the same treatment that comics got when Nolan did Batman. I think the key is straying away from overt anime style like Speed Racer and Dragon Ball and instead try to ground the stories in more relatable ways. With Death Note I tried to give it a gritty lived in look. With that said Death Note is going to be my most insane movie yet. It makes The Guest look conventional."
As someone who enjoyed watching the anime, I like what I'm seeing in the trailer. Regardless of any changes that are made, it still looks like it will be a solid movie. I don't expect everyone to agree with me, I know a lot of fans won't like what they see. It's just the nature of fandom.
My favorite aspect of the film is that Willem Dafoe is providing the voice of Ryuk. He's perfect! The movie also stars Margaret Qualley, Lakeith Stanfield, Paul Nakauchi, and Shea Whigham. Here's the synopsis:
Based on the famous Japanese manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, Death Note follows a high school student who comes across a supernatural notebook, realizing it holds within it a great power; if the owner inscribes someone’s name into it while picturing their face, he or she will die. Intoxicated with his new godlike abilities, the young man begins to kill those he deems unworthy of life.
Death Note will premiere on Netflix on August 25th.
