Netflix Reveals New MONONOKE: THE CURSE OF THE SERPENT Trailer and September Release Date

The Medicine Seller has one more nightmare to deal with, and this one comes with scales. Netflix has revealed the new trailer for Mononoke the Movie: Chapter III - The Curse of the Serpent, along with a September 29 release date for the third and final chapter of the gorgeous and deeply strange anime trilogy.

After The Phantom in the Rain and The Ashes of Rage, the story is heading toward its conclusion with a snake god, a royal tragedy, and some very ugly secrets lurking inside the Inner Chambers.

The new chapter begins with what should have been a moment of celebration. Yukiko, the Emperor's lawful wife, finally gives birth to the long-awaited royal son. The child dies despite desperate prayers to save him, leaving Yukiko devastated and vulnerable to a conspiracy forming around her.

Things inside the palace soon get much worse. Tremors shake the Inner Chambers, mysterious scales begin falling, and a series of brutal deaths points to something supernatural at work.

Enter the Medicine Seller. His investigation leads him to a gigantic serpent Mononoke described as a snake god. His talismans are powerful enough to drive the creature back temporarily, but they aren't going to kill it. To draw the Sacred Sword and destroy the Mononoke, the Medicine Seller must first uncover its Shape, Truth, and Reason.

That's where things should get especially interesting. The Mononoke stories have always been about more than simply hunting down supernatural creatures. Discovering what created these entities means digging into the people surrounding them and exposing the emotions, actions, and buried truths connected to their existence.

The trilogy has gradually shifted its point of view through the different levels of the Ōoku. The Phantom in the Rain centered on a newly arrived maid, while The Ashes of Rage turned toward the concubines.

The Curse of the Serpent moves all the way to the Midaidokoro, the highest-ranking noble, setting up a finale that will pull together threads planted throughout the previous chapters.

There's also plenty of returning talent bringing this final descent into the Inner Chambers to life. Kenji Nakamura serves as chief director, with Tomoaki Koshida directing and Yasumi Atarashi writing the screenplay.

Kitsuneko Nagata leads character design, while Yuichi Takahashi serves as animation character designer and chief animation director. Youichi Katoono oversees background art design, with Akira Kuramoto and Yoko Saito working as background art directors.

Takashi Kurahashi serves as art supervisor, Kunio Tsujita handles color design, and Yoichi Senzui is the visual director.

If you've already watched the first two movies, this is the payoff the trilogy has been building toward. The Medicine Seller is facing a massive supernatural threat, but the real mystery is what he'll uncover about the people and events that gave this serpent Mononoke its power in the first place.

Both Mononoke the Movie: The Phantom in the Rain and Mononoke the Movie: The Ashes of Rage are currently streaming on Netflix, giving fans plenty of time for a rewatch before Mononoke the Movie: Chapter III - The Curse of the Serpent arrives September 29.
