Netflix Sets Theatrical Release Dates For BUSTER SCRUGGS, ROMA, and 22 JULY

Netflix is moving forward with their plan to start releasing some of their original films theatrically. According to Deadline, they set release dates for the Coen Brothers’ western The Ballad of Buster Scruggs for November 6th; Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma will be released on December 14th; and Paul Greengrass’ Norway political thriller 22 July will arrive on October 10th.

These are all films that I am excited about seeing, and it's great that we will be able to have the opportunity to watch them on the big screen if we want.

Here's the information on the films in case you need a reminder:

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is a Western anthology film that will consist of three separate stories about the American wild west. The film stars Tim Blake Nelson as the title character Scruggs, along with Zoe Kazan, Liam Neeson and Tom Waits

Roma chronicles a turbulent year in the lives of a middle-class family in 1970s Mexico City. Cuarón, inspired by the women from his childhood, delivers an artful ode to the matriarchy that shaped his world. Filmed in luminous black and white, ROMA is an intimate, gut-wrenching and ultimately life-affirming portrait of the ways, small and large, one family maintains its balance in a time of personal, social and political strife.

22 July will tell the true story of the aftermath of Norway’s deadliest terrorist attack. On July 22, 2011, 77 people were killed when a far-right extremist detonated a car bomb in Oslo before carrying out a mass shooting at a leadership camp for teens. 22 July uses the lens of one survivor’s physical and emotional journey to portray the country’s path to healing and reconciliation.

By releasing these films in theaters this year, they will be eligible to be nominated for Academy Award nominations next year and that is the kind of prestige that they hope to gain.

What are your thoughts on Netflix starting to release some of their movies in theaters?
