Netflix Shares Nostalgic Farewell Video for Its DVD Mailing Service and The Last DVD Sent Out Was Revealed
Today, Netflix will ship out its final DVDs in the mail. They’ve been mailing out DVDs to subscribers over the past 25 years in their signature red envelopes and that era has come to an end. As a way to say farewell to the service, Netflix has released a nostalgic and charming video that takes a look back at the time of the DVD shipping service. The video came with the following note:
We’ve always loved entertainment and that little red envelope remains an enduring symbol of our mission to make it better for every member. DVDs will forever be in our DNA.
Netflix started shipping DVDs in the mail back in 1998, and according to the company, the first DVD to be shipped out was Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice. The service quickly became a big hit with people and during its time in business, it shipped over 5 billion DVDs.
Deadline also revealed the title of the final Netflix DVD ever sent out, and it was Joel and Ethan Coen's True Grit remake, from 2010.
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos posted on Instagram this morning, writing, "Today, after 25 years, we ship our last DVD." The executive continued: "Those iconic red envelopes were so loved that we shipped more than 5 billion of them to cities and towns, big and small that otherwise would have had no access to the variety of films and television shows we made available."
While there is a nostalgic aspect to Netflix, I still miss the days of browsing movies at my local video stores a lot more. Netflix was the reason a lot of those video stores ended up going out of business.
If you have a final DVD or Blu-ray coming from Netflix, you don’t have to send it back. They are letting you keep it.
