Netflix Shuts Down Its AAA Game Studio Without Releasing a Single Game

Netflix has shut down its AAA game studio in Southern California two years after it was launched, and they never released a video game.

The studio was known as team Blue, and it was one of a “handful” of game studios set up by Netflix as part of a plan to make a big splash in the gaming industry.

Netflix has plenty of mobile games available on its mobile app as of right now, but the plan for this company was to create big-budget games for multiple gaming consoles and platforms.

So, they were supposed to be Netflix games released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PC and Xbox Series X|S. These games would’ve been based on their original IP.

To help with this, Team Blue hired Overwatch’s executive producer Chacko Sonny in 2022 and in 2023 they brought in ex-Halo creative lead Joseph Staten, who exited Xbox Game Studios and his work on Halo Infinite to join the game studio.

Team Blue also hired art director Rafael Grassetti, who previously worked on the God of War franchise at Sony. All three of those big hires are no longer at the company.

There was a strong team of talent there that could’ve created something really cool, but unfortunately, they never had the chance to launch anything that they were working on.

While Netflix is still developing games, none of them are big-budget AAA games that we will see on any of the big platforms.
