Netflix Teams Up With Frank Miller to Develop a King Arthur Series Based on His CURSED Novel

Last week we learned that legendary comic book writer and artist Frank Miller would be developing an illustrated novel called Cursed, which is based on the King Arthur legend, Lady of the Lake. Well, Netflix has already picked up the rights to the book and they will be developing it as a 10-episode TV series.

Miller is working on the book with writer Thomas Wheeler (Lego: Ninjago Movie) and according to Deadline, the same creative team who are working on the book will also be working on the series simultaneously. Its said that they will actually get to explore the characters in more detail in the series than in the book. So... I guess I'll just wait for the series.

Cursed is a re-imagining of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue, a teenage heroine with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake. After her mother’s death, she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a young mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword. Over the course of her journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins, and their complicit King Uther.

I love the idea of telling this King Arthur story that focuses on this character. I'm sure Miller and Wheller will bring something cool and fresh to the retelling of it. Miller's good with this kind of material. It's great to know that we'll also be getting a series. When talking about the story Miller had this to say:

"I have always been entranced by the mythological Arthur story — and by Nimue, in particular. It can be interpreted in any number of ways — from a delightful children’s story, as in The Sword in the Stone, to a terrifying interpretation like Excalibur. This tale represents an incredible opportunity and an exciting challenge for me as an illustrator, and I’m excited to collaborate on the story with Thomas Wheeler. I inherited a collection of antique children’s books from my mother, and I’ve always wanted to have a crack at it myself. This project is a dream come true."

Miller is best known for his comic book work that includes Ronin, Daredevil: Born Again, The Dark Knight Returns, Sin City, and 300. He is also the creator of Elektra for Marvel Comics’ Daredevil series, and Carrie Kelley, for DC Comics.

I can't wait to see what Miller, Netflix, and the creative team for the series end up creating!
