Netflix to Adapt THE WITCH BOY Into an Animated Musical Film with Director Minkyu Lee

Minkyu Lee is an Oscar-nominated director, and his next project will be a magical musical one. Lee is working with Netflix to adapt Molly Knox Osterag’s bestselling novel series The Witch Boy into a musical feature film. In the world of the books, girls grow up to be witches while boys become shapeshifters which is interesting. Then, a boy named Aster finds that he’s getting witch powers, and he has to learn the truth about himself and stop a mysterious force. Here’s a synopsis of the first book:

In thirteen-year-old Aster's family, all the girls are raised to be witches, while boys grow up to be shapeshifters. Anyone who dares cross those lines is exiled. Unfortunately for Aster, he still hasn't shifted...and he's still fascinated by witchery, no matter how forbidden it might be.

Talking about the project, Lee said:

It has been a life-long dream of mine to create an animated film that pushes the medium forward, both in content and form. The connection between this dream, my experiences, and Aster and Juniper’s story is what draws me to this film every day. I am grateful to be creating this with the wonderful team at Netflix. My hope is that this film, by celebrating queerness and “otherness”, will come to audiences around the world as something truly special.

The script for The Witch Boy is written by Maria Melnik and the music is being composed by the sister trio Haim. Are you excited for this film? Have you read the books?
