Netflix’s FRANKENSTEIN Is a Global Hit, Guillermo del Toro’s Gothic Vision Dominates the Charts
When Frankenstein dropped on Netflix on November 7, it didn’t take long for audiences around the world to sink their teeth into Guillermo del Toro’s haunting new take on Mary Shelley’s classic story.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker’s gothic monster tale has become one of Netflix’s most-watched films right now, proving that del Toro still knows how to captivate audiences with his dark, emotional storytelling.
According to Netflix’s internal numbers, Frankenstein became the top English-language movie in 72 countries between November 3 and 9. That’s especially impressive since the film was only available for part of that window, yet it still managed to pull in over 29 million views and rack up nearly 74 million hours watched.
Clearly, a lot of people were eager to experience Frankenstein from the comfort of their couches, or revisit it after catching its limited theatrical run.
Guillermo del Toro shared his excitement about the film’s reception, saying:
“Seeing people embracing Frankenstein in the way I have for over 50 years now is really meaningful. I’ve seen an outpouring of love, with many sharing with me about their repeat viewing, both in the 600 sold-out screenings and now globally on Netflix.
“This is a film I’ve carried with me my entire life, and to see it resonate so deeply with audiences around the world is a really full circle moment.”
Del Toro’s personal approach to Frankenstein, with Oscar Isaac bringing emotional intensity as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi delivering a great performance as the creature, has struck a chord with viewers.
While it’s uncertain whether Frankenstein can maintain its position at the top of Netflix’s global charts, it’s already in strong company. The animated musical KPop Demon Hunters continues to hold its own as Netflix’s most-watched film of the year, still pulling in impressive viewership numbers even 21 weeks after release.
Regardless of what happens next week, del Toro’s Frankenstein has clearly hit a nerve. It’s a dark, beautiful, and deeply human reimagining of a timeless story, and judging by the millions of people streaming it, it’s a monster hit in every sense of the word.
