Netflix’s ONE PIECE Reveals First Look at a Surprise Character Debut in Season 2
Fans are almost back on the Grand Line as Netflix gears up for the next chapter of One Piece. The live-action adaptation has done a solid job honoring Eiichiro Oda’s beloved manga while making a few adjustments to better fit the series format.
Season 2 is already proving it isn’t afraid to remix the timeline, and the latest reveal confirms one of the most unexpected changes yet.
Netflix has officially confirmed the early appearance of a character fans never expected to see this soon. Even better, and we’ve already gotten our first look.
Rumors had been circulating that the live-action series secretly cast a future Straw Hat crew member. Those reports have now been proven true. The character in question is Brook, the iconic undead musician who eventually joins Monkey D. Luffy’s crew during the Thriller Bark arc in the original manga and anime.
That storyline is still far down the road for the live-action series, which makes this reveal a pretty surprising move.
Instead of the skeletal version fans know, Brook will appear in his human form. The character is played by Martial T. Batchamen, giving viewers an early glimpse at the pirate before his supernatural transformation. It’s a clever way to introduce the character without jumping too far ahead in the story’s timeline.
While the reveal might feel unexpected at first, it actually lines up with other hints Netflix has already dropped about Season 2.
Promotional material and trailers have confirmed that Laboon will appear in the upcoming season. The massive whale becomes an emotional part of the Straw Hats’ journey when they first enter the Grand Line.
Longtime fans know Laboon has a connection to Brook, though the full story behind that relationship wasn’t revealed during the whale’s first appearance in the manga or anime.
In the original story, Brook was part of a pirate crew that befriended Laboon. The crew would sing and play music for the lonely whale during their stop in the area. Eventually they were forced to continue their voyage, leaving Laboon behind with the promise that they would return someday.
That promise turned into heartbreak.
Laboon spent years waiting for the crew to come back, repeatedly smashing himself against the surrounding cliffs in grief and frustration. When Luffy and the Straw Hats eventually meet the whale, they encounter a creature still clinging to that hope.
Brook himself wouldn’t cross paths with the Straw Hats until much later in the Thriller Bark arc, which is why this early appearance in One Piece Season 2 is such an interesting twist.
Whether we’ll see Brook’s famous skeleton form this early remains a mystery. If it does happen, it will likely appear in flashbacks tied to Laboon’s story.
Considering that Tony Tony Chopper is being brought to life with CG in the new season, the same kind of visual effects would almost certainly be used to create Brook’s skeletal look.
For now, the reveal feels like a cool nod to longtime fans while planting seeds for storylines that could pay off much later. If Netflix’s One Piece continues to sail forward for several seasons, the groundwork for the Thriller Bark arc may already be quietly taking shape.
