New A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS Poster Feature Dunk and Egg - " A Journey Far From The Throne"
HBO is gearing up for the premiere of its next Game of Thrones spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and the latest poster and it puts the spotlight on the unlikely duo at the heart of the story.
Fans get a fresh look at Ser Duncan the Tall, better known as Dunk, and his young squire Egg as they begin a journey that takes them far away from anything resembling royal grandeur.
The new poster highlights Peter Claffey as Dunk alongside Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg, who is secretly a Targaryen prince. HBO is expected to drop another trailer this week, setting the stage for the series as it heads toward its premiere next month.
The cast is stacked with familiar and rising talent. Season one will also feature Finn Bennett from True Detective Night Country as Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel from The Crown as Baelor Targaryen, Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, Daniel Ings from The Gentlemen as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, and Sam Spruell from Fargo as Maekar Targaryen.
HBO has already committed to a second season, a strong show of confidence before the first even airs.
This series is taking a very different approach from both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. It trades in massive battles and sweeping political chaos for something more grounded.
Even the opening sequence is being scaled way down. Co creator Ira Parker previously said: "All decisions came down to Dunk, trying to channel the type of person he is into every aspect of this show, even the title sequence.
“The title sequences on the original [Game of Thrones] and House of Dragon are big and epic and incredible. Ramin Djawadi’s score is orchestral and large and beautiful. That's not really Dunk’s M.O. He’s plain and he’s simple and he’s to-the-point. He doesn't have a lot of flash to him."
The show adapts George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas and takes place roughly ninety years before Game of Thrones.
It follows Dunk, a future Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, and Egg, who will one day become King Aegon V Targaryen. Their travels carry them through a Westeros that is still ruled by the Targaryen line and not too far removed from an age of dragons.
As the official description puts it, "Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends."
Martin has said that Season 1 will adapt his 1998 novella The Hedge Knight. Later seasons will move on to The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight, giving fans hope for a full adaptation of the trilogy over time.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms arrives this January with House of the Dragon returning next summer for its third and penultimate season.
