New AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Synopsis Teases the Multiverse's Final Chapter and the Future of the MCU
Marvel Studios offered some more details on Avengers: Doomsday, thanks to a newly released synopsis that paints a much bigger picture of where the Marvel Cinematic Universe is headed.
With tickets set to go on sale and excitement building after the first full trailer dropped, fans now have another intriguing clue about what this massive crossover event has in store.
As movie theaters brace for an expected rush of Marvel fans trying to secure their seats, Fandango has revealed a brand-new official synopsis for the film, and it hints that this movie won't just be another Avengers adventure. It's setting the stage for the next era of the MCU.
The synopsis reads: "Universes collide and the Multiverse Saga begins its final chapter in Marvel Studios' Avengers: Doomsday. Beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and ultimately face an existential threat unlike anything they've ever encountered. This epic film will lay the foundation for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe."
It's a short description, but the biggest takeaway is that Avengers: Doomsday is being positioned as the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga while also serving as the launching point for whatever comes next.
Marvel has spent years building toward this moment, and it certainly sounds like the MCU will look very different once the credits roll.
The "existential threat" almost certainly points to Doctor Doom, who will be played by Robert Downey Jr. in one of the most unexpected casting moves Marvel has ever made.
Even so, it's hard to imagine Doom being the movie's only surprise. Much like Spider-Man: Brand New Day is keeping its main villain a mystery, Doomsday probably has a few major twists it's saving for theaters.
The synopsis also references heroes from "three distinct universes," which lines up with everything we've heard and seen for the film. The movie is expected to unite characters from across Marvel's cinematic history, including the Fox-era X-Men making their long-awaited MCU debut alongside returning Avengers like Chris Hemsworth's Thor and Chris Evans' Steve Rogers.
Then there's The Fantastic Four, who are expected to cross over from their own reality after Doom's apparent visit involving Reed Richards and Sue Storm's child. That crossover helps explain exactly what Marvel means when it talks about multiple universes colliding.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the synopsis is its promise that the film will "lay the foundation for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe." That certainly fuels speculation that Doomsday could mark the end of the road for several fan favorite characters.
