New BLACK ADAM Photos and Dwayne Johnson Says He'll Battle Superman One Day
Thanks to Total Film / Games Radar, we have some new photos to share with you of Dwayne Johnson all decked out as Black Adam on the set of the DC film. They feature Johnson working on the film, and he certainly looks great in the role!
Johnson also opened up about the film and the characters that he’s playing. Black Adam is an antihero and one of the most powerful beings in DC Universe. He was a slave from Kahndaq who was granted superpowers from the wizard Shazam. But, Adam ended up choosing a dark path of revenge against those who wronged him, and he’s looking to settle the score by any means necessary.
Johnson says the character is "a bad motherf*cker," and that’s one of the main reason that he gravitated toward the role. When talking about how the project came together, the actor said:
"Official offers never happened. It was always conversations with studio heads. But there was always something unique, different about Black Adam. He was a villain, an antihero, depending on your interpretation of what a villain is. I loved this idea that his pain and rage comes from loss, and was fuelled by oppression. And at some point, he refused to be held down any more. If you wrong him, his family, or his people, then you will die. Period. That is just that simple."
Johnson goes on to once again talk about shaking up the DC cinematic universe and how Black Adam will change the hierarchy of power saying:
"Right from the beginning, we gelled, because it was like: 'OK, our goal and our North Star is the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change.' Let’s have guts. Let’s get after it. And let’s be destructive."
The actor then talked about building the character and film properly and avoiding the mistakes that were made in the past. He explains that that made are making sure to respect the mythology and that he’s confident that one day we will see a battle between Black Adam and Superman:
"You get one shot out of the gates to build these characters properly. We paid attention to some of the pitfalls that other films had experienced in the past, in the world of DC, and what, rightfully, got a lot of fans unhappy and pissed – and, as a fan, I was one of them.
"So, let’s make sure we respect tradition and mythology, but let’s not be handcuffed creatively. We can do anything if we keep the audience first. So to me, there’s a battle that’s going to go down one day, between Black Adam and Superman. I don’t know who that Superman is going to be, and I don’t know who’s going to play him. That’s OK. I don’t need to know right now. But I’m confident in knowing that [laughs]. And that’s based out of what fans want. We worked backwards from there."
I would personally love to see his take on Henry Cavill’s Superman. I think that’s the one all of the fans want to see come back.
Black Adam also stars Aldis Hodge (Underground, The Invisible Man), who plays Hawkman in the film, and he and Johnson are joined by Noah Centineo (To All the Boys I Love Before, Charlie's Angels) as Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell (Trinkets, Euphoria) as Cyclone, and Pierce Brosnan (GoldenEye, Mamma Mia!) as Doctor Fate, as well as Sarah Shahi (Person of Interest, The L Word), Marwan Kenzari (The Old Guard, Aladdin), and Uli Latukefu (Young Rock), who have been cast in unspecified roles.
Jaume Collet-Serra (Jungle Cruise) is directing Black Adam, the most recent script was written by Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani. Adam Sztykiel wrote the previous draft.
Black Adam will hit theaters on July 29th, 2022.
