New CLAYFACE Fan Theory Could Explain Matt Hagen’s Disturbing Obsession With Caitlyn Corr

What if Matt Hagen's increasingly disturbing behavior in DC's Clayface wasn't entirely his own doing? A creepy new fan theory suggests that the technology responsible for turning him into a shapeshifting monster may also be controlling his feelings, particularly his obsession with Dr. Caitlyn Corr.

In the DCU horror film, Matt Hagen suffers horrific facial injuries at the hands of a gangster before receiving an experimental treatment from Caitlyn. The procedure repairs his damaged face, but it comes with a pretty messed-up side effect. Matt develops grotesque shapeshifting abilities, and his life quickly spirals into a bloody nightmare.

Rather than embrace his second chance, Matt sets out on a violent revenge mission. As his behavior becomes more erratic, he also develops an unhealthy fixation on Caitlyn. However, one fan thinks there might be a biological explanation for his obsession.

The theory centers on the nanites used in Caitlyn's experimental treatment. Before using the technology on Matt, she tested it with her own DNA. That detail has led to speculation that the nanites may have developed an attachment to Caitlyn before ever entering Matt's body.

One fan offered this interesting explanation: "I have a wild theory that it's the nanites who are attracted to her, not Matt himself as Caitlyn have been experimenting on the nanites by regularly using her DNA on the nanites before Matt came to her,"

Another fan took the idea even further, suggesting that Caitlyn may have unknowingly programmed Matt's obsession into the very technology that saved his life.

"I actually believe this theory, and if it's true, it makes Caitlyn's role in Matt's downfall WAY darker than people realize. She had been experimenting with the nanites using her own DNA before Matt ever entered the picture.

“So what if the nanites were already conditioned to recognize her as their original template, and Matt's obsession with her was the technology influencing him rather than genuine love?

"Think about it: every time his body healed, reshaped itself, or reacted to her, we assumed it was Matt making those choices. But what if the nanites were driving his attachment all along? What if Matt never truly fell in love with Caitlyn, but was biologically programmed to crave her?

“That would mean Caitlyn didn’t just create Clayface. She might have accidentally created a monster that could never stop coming back to her."

That's a pretty unsettling possibility, and it adds an interesting layer to Matt's transformation. If the theory holds up, his obsession with Caitlyn isn't simply a case of romantic feelings turning into something dangerous. It could be the result of the nanites recognizing her DNA and influencing Matt's behavior without his knowledge.

It also makes Caitlyn's involvement in creating Clayface considerably more tragic. She wanted to help Matt recover from a horrific injury, but her experiments may have unintentionally created a biological connection that neither of them could control.

Of course, there's another explanation that's arguably more disturbing: Matt is responsible for his own actions.

The film makes it clear that he's given an opportunity to rebuild his life, yet he chooses violence and revenge. His obsession with Caitlyn could simply be another example of his inability to accept rejection and let go of what he wants.

Still, I really like this fan theory. The idea that Matt's changing body might also be manipulating his emotions fits nicely with the film's body horror. It raises an interesting question about how much control he actually has over himself once the nanites begin transforming him.

Whether the filmmakers intended that interpretation or not, it gives fans another creepy way to look at Matt Hagen's downfall.

What do you think? Could the nanites be responsible for Matt's obsession with Caitlyn, or was he always heading down this destructive path?
