New Details Emerge for Noah Hawley's DOCTOR DOOM Movie

A couple years ago it was revealed that Noah Hawley (Fargo, Legion) was developing a Marvel film for Fox that would be based on Doctor Doom.

There were a good amount of fans that actually seemed to dig this idea, but with Marvel currently in the middle of buying Fox, the project is floating around in limbo. THR recently spoke with Hawley about the project and he revealed that he actually met with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige about the movie.

Apparently Feige asked him if he was still working on the script, to which Hawley replied, “Should I still be working on it?” Of course, he didn’t say what Feige said after that! He went on to joke that Feige wouldn't reveal the "thousand-year plan" for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to him.

The filmmaker went on to share some additional details on his Doctor Doom movie saying that “he envisions Doctor Doom as a geopolitical thriller more than a standard superhero movie.” The story begins with Doom “putting a dome over Latveria, the fictional European country he rules. He later invites a female journalist to be his voice to the world, meaning its protagonist would be someone without superpowers.”

That certainly sounds like it could make for an interesting story. When previously talking about how he would handle the character, Hawley explained:

"What’s interesting to me about Doom’s character is he’s the King of an Eastern European country and is there a version of this that is more of a political thriller that mixes genre?…It’s something that Captain America: The Winter Soldier did really well, which was kind of make a Cold War thriller movie out of a superhero movie. This is different than that, but it does have this idea of, and I don’t want to say too much about it, but it is a mixture of genres… the mandate is not to re-launch the Fantastic Four franchise as much as it is to take this fascinating and under-served character and really build a movie about him where we ask the question: Is he a hero? Is he a villain? What does he really want?”

I like Hawley’s approach to the character and story. The fact that he's looking to make Doctor Doom an antihero in the film is certainly an intriguing one that would fall in line with the current iteration of the comic book.

Who knows if this movie will ever see the light of day. But I think it’d be cool if Marvel Studios actually decided to take it on. Do you think they will? Would you like to see this Doctor Doom movie eventually get made? What do you think about the direction he wants to take the story?
