New Details For THE DARK CRYSTAL: AGE OF RESISTANCE Reveal The Setting of the Story
One of my most anticipated series is The Jim Henson Company's new series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, which is coming to Netflix. I loved the original film when I was a kid and the more I hear about the fantastical adventurous prequel series that’s be developed, the more excited I get!
Up until now all we’ve really known about the series is that it takes place several years before the events of the first film. It will consist of ten episodes and it's being created using "an ensemble of fantastical, state-of-the-art creatures created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and Brian Froud, the original feature’s conceptual designer."
It’s also been confirmed that this series is not an immediate prequel, "so it doesn’t end at the point where the original movie starts. It takes place significantly earlier than when the movie’s story takes place.
It was revealed during a panel at NYCC that The Jim Henson company has been workin on this series for the past seven years. Director Louis Letterier also said that there will be no CGI used in the series. It’s all puppets and practical sets, just like the original film was made. The only difference is they use green screens allows them to remove the body of the puppeteer from the frame in the editing process.
As for the new details on the setting of the film, it was inspired by a scene in the original movie which followed Jen, the last survivor of the Gefling race, who sets out on a journey to find a shard of the Dark Crystal and defeat the evil Skeksis race. Brian Henson says:
“In the original movie, Jen and Kira stop at the wall of destiny and they see the ruins of what was once a beautiful Gefling culture, and we took that as a jumping of point for the whole series.”
“What was that culture, what was lost, what was that beautiful Gefling civilization? It’s very developed, with a big canvas with many different group of Gelflings…it’s rich.”
That sounds so cool! we are going to see the planet Thra thriving before the Dark Crystal was cracked! Henson went on to say that when dev eloping the series they drew inspiration from Avatar: The Last Airbender, Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings. Letterrier added:
“We need to serve the fans…but also we need to create new fans. Kids these days, they haven’t seen puppets that look like this. It’s different and sometimes quite scary. There’s action and drama and a few deaths. You’re going to like it.”
There’s no word yet on when this show will premiere, but it’ll probably hit Netflix sometime in 2019. I can’t wait!
