New Details on Nick Fury's Role in CAPTAIN MARVEL and How The Film Was Inspired By 90s Action Movies
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has offered a few new details regarding Captain Marvel and I think you're going to like what you hear.
Captain Marvel is set to be released after the big ass Avengers: Infinity War film. The movie, which stars Brie Larson in the title role, is set in the 1990s and it will involve a war between the Kree and the Skrull alien races. It will also bring us a version of Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury that we've never seen before.
He will be about 20 years younger, long before he showed up to recruit Tony Stark into the Avengers Initiative. While talking to EW, Kevin Feige offered some new details about Fury's important role in the story and also talks about how Captain Marvel was inspired by the classic action films of the 90s. He says:
"We wanted to explore a period before Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury had any idea about any of the other heroes and crazy stuff going on in the world. You know, we first met Nick when he told Tony, 'You’re part of a big universe. You just don’t know yet.' Well, we want to go back to a time when he didn’t know it yet, and really showcase and announce that Carol Danvers was that first hero that Nick came across. That meant she could be the singular hero, but place it within timing of the [Marvel Cinematic Universe]."
He then goes on to talk about the 90s action film inspiration, saying:
"It also got us talking about different genres, exploring this notion of sort of the ‘90s action film. We hadn’t necessarily done anything like that before either, so there are definitely homages to our favorite ‘90s action films within Captain Marvel."
Feige was then asked which ’90s movies influenced Captain Marvel, and he offers an answer that should make fans happy:
“Not necessarily talking about any particulars of the story, but the action elements of Terminator 2. That’s about as iconic as you get, looking at kind of those cool street level fights, street level car chases, and fun stuff like that.”
That's pretty cool! I actually really love the fact that this film will be reminiscent of 90s action films because I love 90s action films!
With Captain Marvel being set in the 90s, I imagine the events of Avengers: Infinity War won't really affect its story. What I do think it will effect is the return of Captain Marvel to Earth from wherever she's been. When talking about the juggling of characters and stories, Feige says:
"You start to think differently about how the characters are interacting, what character’s stories are coming to a close, and what character’s stories are only just beginning,"
When talking about the post-Infinity War Marvel Cinematic Universe, Feige said:
"Those stories will continue. I think they’ll continue in surprisingly different and unexpected ways after these two Avengers films."
We all know things are going to change drastically after Avengers 4 and the MCU won't be the same, which actually makes the future of Marvel movies even more exciting!
Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8, 2019.
