New Details Reveled For Some STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI Characters
Yesterday some stunning photos were released featuring the cast of Star Wars: The Last Jedi all decked out as the characters. These photos got a lot of love from the fans. Today we have some additional details regarding some of the characters in these photos.
These details come from Pablo Hidalgo, in an interview with Vanity Fair. Hidalgo is Lucasfilm's Story Group creative executive and according to J.J. Abrams, the "keeper of all arcane details of Star Wars".
First up we have Laura Dern’s Admiral Amilyn Holdo. Hidalgo confirms that she is a high-ranking officer in the Resistance and that she is human. He explains that the magenta hair color is part of her “cultural background.”
She seems like a character that would fit in with the group of high-class people of Canto Bight, which is basically an upscale version of the Mos Eisley cantina. When talking about these privileged individuals in The Last Ledi, Hidalgo says:
“What we’re going to see in The Last Jedi are some people who have managed to carve out a life for themselves where they can live apart from the galactic struggle. They found a way to live above it or beyond it. There’s a class of wealthy that have helped build all sorts of loopholes in society that will always ensure that they’ll survive or even thrive no matter what else is happening out there."
To put it bluntly, Canto Bight is "a playground, basically, for rich assholes." One of the characters you won't find mingling with this crowd for pleasure is Gwendoline Christie’s Captain Phasma. She's got more important things to attend to. The first time we see this character unmasked is in the photos that were released, and when talking about that he explained:
"I think a big part of the allure of her character was just wondering what might be underneath. It was only relatively recently that we wanted to commit to the idea that there was a human under there. The Force Awakens left that question, but as we got further into Last Jedi, as well as some other stories we’re thinking about with Phasma, we had to ask ourselves, ‘All right, do we agree there’s a human under there?’"
It's then revealed that Phasma will also have a new weapon that she'll be wielding in the film. Hidalgo says that it “doesn’t have a fancy name yet" but it's described as a "retractable pole arm that collapses into a smaller, easy to carry form should she ever find herself shoved down a trash compactor again." The weapon also is said to have a strong connection to Phasma’s history, which is going to be explored in a comic-book series, out in September. Hidalgo teases that her background “is more low-tech than many would assume.”
One more little detail that has been confirmed involves Luke Skywalker's island home on the planet of Ahch-To. He isn't living on the planet alone. There is a race of "non-Jedi care taking inhabitants" on the island and they aren't Ewoks. These aliens reside in the stone huts that are on the island. Rumored details of this alien race surfaced a few months ago and if you want more information on what these creatures are, you can read about it here.
The movie hits theaters on December 15th.
