New Details Shared For Chris Rock's SAW Film SPIRAL Reveal Deeper Meaning Under The Carnage
The upcoming Saw film Spiral: From The Book of Saw has me the most excited I’ve been about a Saw movie since the very first movie was released. The fact that the story came from Chris Rock and that he stars in it alongside Samuel L. Jackson is pretty cool and completely unexpected.
This next film seems like it’s going to be unique from the other sequels and breathe fresh new life back into the horror franchise. While the franchise is mostly known for the crazy carnage, violence, blood, and chaos, there are deeper meanings and this next film is going to explore some of those things.
Darren Bousman (of Saw II, Saw III, Saw IV, Repo! The Genetic Opera) directed Spiral and this is the synopsis that was previously shared:
A sadistic mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in Spiral, the terrifying new chapter from the book of Saw. Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel "Zeke" Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner William Schenk (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.
The director recently was a guest on the No-Praise From God podcast and he shared some additional details after he was asked if the film deals with any of “life’s biggest questions,” which brought him to the philosophy behind the film:
Chris Rock’s character is dealing with some baggage which I, and many others, will find themselves dealing with. Moreso in a relationship with father and son, with Samuel L. Jackson who plays his dad. We definitely get into stuff like that. And we definitely get into philosophies. I think of the things I love about the Saw franchise in general is the philosophies of what the killer is doing. If you go back and watch what Jigsaw is doing it's a philosophy. He’s trying to teach people to appreciate their life.
Spiral: From The Book of Saw will be released in theaters on May 21st, 2021. I can’t wait to see what Rock and the rest of the creative team have come up with for this film, but I think it’s going to end up being very different from the other Saw films that have come before.
