New Details Shared Regarding Ridley Scott's GLADIATOR 2
Late last year it was reported that director Ridley Scott was going to move forward with Gladiator 2. This project is still in active development and today we have new details to share with you.
It’s kind of crazy that we are actually getting a sequel to this movie almost 20 years after the first movie was released. According to producer Walter F. Parkes, the story for the sequel will pick up “ 30 years later… 25 years later.” Three decades after the death of Russell Crowe’s character Maximus.
Maximus will not be in the movie, obviously. But fans still think it’s an odd choice to make a sequel to the movie. In regards to that, producer Laurie MacDonald says that nobody would be moving forward on the project if they didn't think there was a great way to do it:
“We’re working with Ridley, that’s one we wouldn’t touch unless we felt in a way to do it was legitimate. We’re working with an amazing writer as well, Peter Craig.”
As for the story that the sequel will tell, all we know so far is that it will follow the continuing story of Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), “The youth was the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the weaselly son of Roman leader Marcus Aurelius who murdered his father seized the throne and wound up in the gladiator ring with Maximus, who though mortally wounded, skewered the emperor before fading into the great beyond to reunite with his slain wife and son. Maximus saved the boy and his mother while avenging his own family, and left a strong impression on the young Lucius.”
Ridley Scott is looking to direct this movie, and if you’re not familiar with screenwriter Peter Craig, he previously worked on The Town, two Hunger Games films, as well as 12 Strong and the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick.
It’ll be interesting to see what story the creative team is building around Lucious. As a fan of the first film, I’m curious and looking forward to seeing how this turns out.
