New Details Surface Revealing Why Disney Canceled THE HUNT FOR BEN SOLO
Some interesting new details have surfaced about the canceled Star Wars project The Hunt for Ben Solo, which is a film that was once in development with Steven Soderbergh writing and directing and Adam Driver returning as Ben Solo.
The movie, which reportedly took place after The Rise of Skywalker, had a completed script and a big creative direction, yet Disney ultimately pulled the plug before production ever began.
Originally, it was believed that Disney’s Bob Iger shut down the project because he couldn’t see how Ben Solo could have survived the events of The Rise of Skywalker. But according to a new report from The Playlist, the decision might have been driven by more than just story logic.
“Internally, that reaction surprised Lucasfilm leadership, who reportedly felt the story’s logic was clear and creatively sound. Several people close to the production interpret the decision as politically motivated, coinciding with Iger’s efforts to position Bergman as his successor at Disney,” the article reads.
“The fallout from that decision appears to have extended beyond the project itself. Bergman’s handling of several high-profile initiatives has been criticized internally, and his standing within Disney’s succession plan has reportedly weakened. Other executives, including Josh D’Amaro and Dana Walden, are now viewed as stronger contenders for the top job.”
That’s a pretty heavy claim, suggesting The Hunt for Ben Solo might have become collateral damage in a larger corporate chess match at Disney. This is why these big studio corporations are so annoying with the silly corporate politics affecting film projects.
The report also adds that Scott Z. Burns, who worked on the screenplay, was paid more than any screenwriter in Lucasfilm history for his work on the project. Despite the record-breaking payout, both Soderbergh and Driver were never compensated for their involvement.
“Burns reportedly received a low but substantial seven-figure sum.”
Fans have reignited their calls for Lucasfilm to revisit the project and finally bring The Hunt for Ben Solo to life. The story had the potential to explore one of Star Wars’ most complex characters in a much better way then the sequel trilogy did.
At the moment, though, neither Disney nor Lucasfilm has announced any plans to revive the movie.
