New ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK Movie Will Be Helmed by the Directors of SCREAM

The directing team Radio Silence, who previously helmed Ready or Not and Scream, are now set to develop a reboot of John Carpenter’s Escape From New York for 20th Century Studios. Carpenter will serve as an executive producer on the project.

As a fan of the original movie, I’ve gotta say that I’m not happy with it getting a modern-day reboot. I like the Radio Silence directing team, which consists of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella, and it’s nice that Carpenter is a part of it, but I’m still not completely sold on the idea.

There’s no information on what the new approach for the film is, but I imagine it will be in line with the original movie. In that story, a major war between the United States and the Soviet Union is concluding, and the entire island of Manhattan has been converted into a giant maximum security prison. When Air Force One is hijacked and crashes into the island, the president (Donald Pleasence) is taken hostage by a group of inmates. Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell), a former Special Forces soldier turned criminal, is recruited to retrieve the president in exchange for his own freedom.

The Picture Company partners Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman will produce the film along with Radio Silence. They are currently on the hunt for a writer.

What are your thoughts on Escape From New York getting rebooted by Radio Silence and John Carpenter?
