New GODZILLA MINUS ZERO Trailer Unleashes Godzilla and King Ghidorah as Japan Faces Another Nightmare
Toho has released a new trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero, and things are looking pretty damn terrifying for Japan. Godzilla is back, King Ghidorah is bringing even more destruction, and the people who barely survived the first movie are about to find themselves fighting for their lives all over again.
The sequel to Godzilla Minus One takes place in 1949, just two years after the events of the original film. Japan is still recovering from World War II and the devastation left by Godzilla's previous attack. People are trying to rebuild their homes and move forward with their lives, but that's going to be difficult when giant monsters start tearing the country apart again.
The new trailer delivers some spectacular shots of Godzilla and King Ghidorah wreaking havoc, but it's the human drama that makes the footage especially interesting.
One particularly disturbing moment shows former kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima flying past a woman trapped inside her home as it floats high above the ground. The camera then shows the house falling back to Earth. It's a brutal reminder of what these monsters are capable of and the innocent people caught in their path.
The trailer also shows the returning characters struggling to deal with another disaster. Plans are falling apart, people are terrified, and those who survived Godzilla's previous rampage are being forced to confront the nightmare again.
There's also an intriguing mystery involving Kōichi's wife, Noriko Oishi, who survived Godzilla's attack on Ginza in the first movie. As fans will remember, Noriko was believed to have died after pushing Kōichi to safety, only to turn up alive with a mysterious black mark on her neck.
The sequel appears ready to explore what actually happened to her. A doctor tells Kōichi that Noriko had “no business surviving” the attack, suggesting there's something unusual about her recovery.
Things get even more concerning when Kōichi tells Noriko, “they know all about it.” Whatever secret she's carrying could have some serious implications for the story, and I'm curious to see where director Takashi Yamazaki takes it.
Yamazaki returns to write, direct, and oversee the visual effects for Godzilla Minus Zero. After the incredible work he delivered with Godzilla Minus One, it's exciting to see him continuing the story with the same characters while raising the stakes with another iconic Toho monster.
Ryunosuke Kamiki reprises his role as Kōichi Shikishima, alongside Minami Hamabe as Noriko Oishi. The returning cast also includes Hidetaka Yoshioka as Kenji Noda, Yuki Yamada as Shiro Mizushima, Kuranosuke Sasaki as Seiji Akitsu, Sakura Ando as Sumiko Ota, and Miou Tanaka as Tatsuo Hotta.
Godzilla Minus Zero hits theaters on November 6, with select AMC Theatres offering early IMAX screenings on November 3, also known as Godzilla Day.
