New HIDDEN FIGURES Trailer — Untold Story of Black Female Mathematicians at NASA

Growing up near JPL and just being a bit of a science nerd, some of my favorite movies are The Right Stuff and Apollo 13. Hidden Figures gives us something really different than those other space race films and tells the story of three women trying not only to break the gender glass ceiling of 1960s America but also the racial norms of that time.

Taraji P. Henson who plays physicist, space scientist, and mathematician Katherine Johnson is perfectly cast in what looks like role built for an Oscar nomination. Janelle Monae as mathematician and aerospace engineer Mary Jackson looks surprisingly delightful, looking at her IMDb shows that this is only her second real acting role. Octavia Spencer as mathematician Dorothy Vaughan seems like a safe bet.

My impression from the trailer is it's a lot like a feel good sports movie. Humor, science, and based on a true story, Hidden Figures is ticking all my boxes for a movie to be a "must watch."

HIDDEN FIGURES is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)-brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation's confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world.
