New HOBBS AND SHAW Photo Taps into Dwayne Johnson's Culture and Warrior Mana

Dwayne Johnson has released a new photo from the Fast and Furious spinoff film Hobbs and Shaw and it’s an image that I wasn’t expecting to see. But, it’s pretty badass. The image came along with the following note from the actor:

“This sacred Samoan ground you stand on is nourished with our ancestors blood. Tonight, we nourish it with yours. Here’s a lil’ exclusive from set of HOBBS & SHAW, our FAST & FURIOUS spin off film coming this summer. I’ve been waiting for this my entire career. This is more than a movie to me - our culture & warrior mana is very real. More to come. Now they bleed.”

I’m curious to see how they end up implementing this culture into the movie and Hobbs’ story.

Hobbs will be once again teaming up with Jason Statham’s character Shaw for a new mission in which they will find themselves facing off against a new villain named Brixton, who is played by Idris Elba. When previously talking about Brixton, Johnson said:

“Our goal with Idris to make him the baddest villain the franchise has ever seen. Coming in, he is undefeated. And for a guy who is undefeated, three men enter and either one man leaves or two leave. And I say that respectfully because there have been so many bad guys who we’ve had over the years. But Idris is the perfect guy.”

There aren’t a lot of plot details that have been revealed for the movie, but director David Leitch (Deadpool 2) did previously tease what we can expect, saying:

“We’re going to go on an exciting ride with these two beloved characters of the franchise who were always at odds. I think of the classics like Lethal Weapon or 48 Hrs, or some of these ’80s and ’90s buddy-cop comedies – that dynamic was fostered in the original [Fast] franchise, we’re going to take it and expand the whole world around it.”

He goes on to explain that “We’re going to learn about Hobbs’ past and his connections and his family, and we’re going to learn more about Shaw and his world.” It’s then explained that the film will still have the tone of the Fast and Furious films, but it will also be its own thing:

“We wanted to make sure that we can make a movie that sat comfortably in the Fast world, but was distinctly its own. And I think we’re on the road to doing it… Our guys aren’t street racers. They’re from the agency world, and we’re building up their world so we can diversify the action and have fun in all different ways.”

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is written by Chris Morgan and other stars include Vanessa Kirby, and Eddie Marsan. The current release date for Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is August 2, 2019.
