New Image From HBO Max's GREMLINS: SECRETS OF THE MOGWAI Animated Series
Think about this… it’s been more than 30 years since Gremlins 2: The New Batch was released in theaters. That’s crazy! I still remember watching the movie in theaters like it was just yesterday. Well, all these years later we are getting a new Gremlins story in the form of an animated series and I’m pretty excited about it!
The series will consist of 10 episodes, and it’s being developed by Once Upon a Time and Gotham writer Tze Chun. This is the previously released synopsis for the series:
Set in 1920s Shanghai, the series will tell the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing (future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 movie) met the young Mogwai called Gizmo. Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.
The series is set to make its big debut in June at the Annecy Animation Festival, and in anticipation of that, we have a new image from the series to share with you, which you can see above.
The series stars Izaac Wang (Raya and the Last Dragon) as the 10-year-old Sam, Gabrielle Nevaeh Green (All That) as Elle, Ming-Na Wen (The Book of Boba Fett) as Sam's mother, Fong, who is described as "a doctor of Chinese medicine who is resourceful, slyly funny and fiercely protective of her family," and BD Wong (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) as Sam's father, Hon, "a calm rock that has never believed his father-in-law's tales of magic and adventure." Hon's father-in-law is also referred to as simply Grandpa, a character who is voiced by James Hong (Turning Red) and "claims to have traveled the world on grand adventures and he alone knows the true power (and secrets) of the Mogwai and the importance of protecting them." Then there’s Matthew Rhys (The American, Perry Mason), who is voicing the show's villain Riley Greene, "a power-hungry English industrialist and treasure hunter who wields black magic that is determined to stop at nothing in his pursuit of Gizmo and the mythical treasure of the Mogwai."
The director of the original films, Joe Dante, is a consultant on the film, and Tze Chun (Once Upon a Time, Gotham, and Little America) is serving as head writer. HBO Max will debut the series at some point in 2022.
