New Images From THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS Which Will Throw "Down The Matrix Gauntlet Again"
The Matrix Resurrections is coming and fans better get ready because according to Keanu Reeves, "It's throwing down the Matrix gauntlet again; it's super smart, clever, entertaining, suspenseful, and funny."
Thanks to EW, we have some new photos from the film to share with you along with some portrait photos featuring Keanu Reeves and Carrie Ann-Moss, who are reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity.
The Matrix Resurrections is a continuation of the story established in the first Matrix film. “It reunites Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as cinematic icons Neo and Trinity in an expansion of their story that ventures back into the Matrix and even deeper down the rabbit hole. A mind-bending new adventure with action and epic scale, it’s set in a familiar yet even more provocative world where reality is more subjective than ever and all that’s required to see the truth is to free your mind.”
EW also spoke with the cast and crew and they offered up some additional details on the movie, saying it’s an extension of the technology-focused narrative of the original trilogy. Director Lana Wachowski explained that the story for the next film "exploded rather fully formed" from her mind. She said:
"Technology paradoxically brought us closer together while also isolating or inculcating us from each other. The power of technology to trap or limit our subjective reality was an important part of the new narrative for 'Matrix Resurrections.'
"Art is a mirror. Most will prefer to gaze at the surface but there will be people like me who enjoy what lies behind the looking glass. I made this movie for them."
The report goes on to offer some insight on Neo and Trinity, saying they “are seemingly alive and well, but their minds are locked away inside the Matrix, which has become more dangerous. They have no apparent memory of their past, yet Neo is haunted by it. He sees flashes of what transpired in the previous films in his dreams, in what he thinks is everyday life.”
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who plays Morpheus in the movie, explains “there are all of the high concepts surrounding The Matrix within our story, but really there's so much heart and humanity that's driving this narrative." That heart and humanity revolves around the relationship between Neo and Trinity.
Reeves goes on to emphasize on the heart of the movie, saying, "Not that it needed it, but certainly the depth of why this film got made is the sense of it being a love story between Trinity and Neo." Wachowski has a deep connection with these characters and she wanted to continue their story.
Jonathan Groff, who appears in the trailer as an “Agent Smith” type character is described as "a suit who might be more than he appears to be.” The actor went on to say, "When I read the script for this movie I cried, because the idea of watching these two iconic actors in these two iconic parts coming back and fighting to have their love again just wrecked me."
So, it sounds like we can expect a lot of emotions from this movie, which is pretty cool. I’ve been hoping that this movie would have a strong story, and it sounds like it will deliver everything that fans are hoping for.
The movie also stars Jada Pinkett-Smith as Niobe, Daniel Bernhardt as Agent Johnson, and Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian. Some of the other franchise newcomers include Jessica Henwick, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra, and Christina Ricci.
The Matrix: Resurrections opens in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22nd.
