New Info on Finn's Journey in STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI with The New Character Rose

We haven't really seen much of Finn in Star Wars: The Last Jedi or what his story arc will entail. All we've seen of him, besides the new photos that were released today, was of him passed out in some kind of medical bay. I'm sure you all remember that he was critically wounded by a lightsaber.

Thanks to John Boyega in an interview with EW, we have some new details to share with you regarding Finn and the new character Rose (Kelly Marie Tran).

According to the report, Finn is now a “big deal” in the Resistance, and he "embarks on a glamorous mission to the casino city Canto Bight" with Rose Tico, who is a self-described “nobody” who works as a Resistance mechanic.

Turns out that Finn doesn't want to be a part the resistance anymore. He wants out! Boyega explains:

“It got really real for him. And he just wants to get away and not be involved. His intention in the first place was to go to the Outer Rim. He was always brought back [in The Force Awakens,], but this is his chance to get away and perhaps find Rey and go off together. He’s trying to do that at first."

That's a really interesting take on his character, but we all know it's not going to be that easy, and he's going to end up being drawn back in to help save the day. He goes on to talk about Finn finding himself in the spotlight:

"Everyone in the space, throughout the galaxy, would have heard about the young Jedi who discovered her powers and defeated Kylo Ren and the young former Stormtrooper who helped save the day. He’s a hero to people like Rose, who fight for the Resistance because their homes have been destroyed by the First Order."

I love the complication with Finn as he is seen as a hero, but doesn't want to have anything to do with the resistance moving forward. As far as Rose goes, she is described as being "a gearhead, a grease monkey, a behind-the-scenes jack-of-all-trades." She also has a sister named Paige, who is described as being "the dynamic one — a Resistance gunner who fights on the front lines alongside Resistance luminaries like Poe Dameron, Oscar Isaac’s X-wing ace." Tran explains:

“Poe Dameron is super cool. Finn’s super cool. Even though [Rose] is good at what she does, she’s not known. She’s not cool. She’s this nobody, this background player, which is what makes her interesting. She’s not the best. She’s not royalty. She’s someone who is just like everyone else."

It's awesome that they've added a character like this to the story! Bringing a background player to the forefront of the story. When she and Finn meet, she's starstruck by him, but Finn feels it's not deserved. Boyega says:

“He appreciates the adoration for a second, but when he meets her, Finn is trying to escape the whole war. He’s trying to leave. And she comes in and basically gives him a depiction of himself that wasn’t necessarily true.”

It seems like these two characters are going to have a very interesting story dynamic and it will be fun to see how it plays out.
