New MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE Animated Reboot Officially Set for June Launch

It took four decades for Masters of the Universe fans to finally get another live-action movie on the way, but Mattel clearly isn’t interested in stopping there.

While director Travis Knight’s upcoming Masters of the Universe film is gearing up to bring He-Man back to theaters, the company is already expanding Eternia in other directions with a brand-new animated reboot officially arriving next month.

The franchise has stayed alive through comics, toys, and several animated revivals over the years, including the recent Netflix projects produced by Kevin Smith between 2021 and 2024.

Now Mattel is ready to launch another fresh take on the property, and this one appears designed to connect directly with a new generation of fans.

The confirmation comes from the latest issue of The Toy Book magazine, which revealed that Mattel is rolling out a new Masters of the Universe animated reboot on YouTube this summer as part of what the company describes as “a multiyear MOTU roadmap.”

Nick Karamanos, Senior Vice President of Entertainment Partnerships at Mattel, explained the company’s strategy, saying: “For us, it’s about the totality of the property and how we keep it going for kids. That’s a huge part of the plan.”

Karamanos also believes Knight’s upcoming movie could reignite interest in the classic animated series that started it all: “My prediction is that the original series is going to be the next retro title to have it’s time in the sun once again.”

That prediction doesn’t seem far-fetched at all. Nostalgia-driven franchises are everywhere right now, and Masters of the Universe already has a built-in fanbase that’s been waiting years for Mattel to fully commit to a larger connected push.

Writer and director Matthew Brown also revealed that the series launches June 10 exclusively on YouTube. Brown wrote:

“At last, I can speak about what I’ve been working on for the last 6 months: a new animated re-boot of The Masters of the Universe for Mattel. Launches June 10th exclusively on YouTube.”

Mattel still hasn’t officially announced the project, but Brown’s LinkedIn profile reportedly refers to the project as Masters of the Universe: Tales from Eternia. The listing also mentions a 20-episode run, which lines up with previous rumors suggesting the reboot could be structured as a series of animated shorts.

Earlier speculation claimed the show might act as a prequel, but those reports were later shot down. At this point, it sounds much more likely that the series will exist alongside the upcoming movie as part of Mattel’s larger effort to build a stronger, more unified Masters of the Universe brand.

If the movie hits with audiences, Mattel could finally have the momentum needed to turn Masters of the Universe into the kind of ongoing multimedia franchise it’s always had the potential to become.

For longtime He-Man fans, getting a new animated series while a live-action movie is on the horizon feels pretty awesome. Eternia is getting busy again.
