New MORTAL KOMBAT II Trailer Is the Most Fun Yet as It Goes Full Retro with Brutal Fatalities
We’ve got a new Mortal Kombat II trailer for you to watch that hits like a perfectly timed uppercut! This thing is firing on all cylinders as it goes full retro. It’s loud, aggressive, packed with attitude, and fully locked into the DNA of the games.
The footage plays like a love letter to the original games, complete with stylized fighter introductions, brutal finishing moves, and that instantly recognizable theme music that hits with a wave of nostalgia. It doesn’t just hint at the games, it fully embraces them. You can almost hear the announcer calling out each matchup.
Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid is back in the director’s chair, working from a script by Jeremy Slater, whose recent credits include Moon Knight and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. This sequel looks like it could be fun and filled with some wild and savage fight scene. But it will also lean into comedic silliness.
The story ramps things up as Earthrealm’s champions prepare for an all-out war. This time, they’re joined by fan-favorite Johnny Cage, adding some extra swagger to the roster. The fighters are thrown into a brutal, no-holds-barred clash against the looming threat of Shao Kahn, whose rule could wipe out everything they’re fighting to protect.
The cast is stacked with returning faces and new additions, including Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada.
The film is coming in hot with IMAX early fan event screenings on May 6 before its nationwide release on May 8, courtesy of Warner Bros..
Backing the project are New Line Cinema, Atomic Monster, Broken Road Productions, and Fireside Films, and it’s officially rated R for “strong bloody violence and gore, and language.”
On top of all that, Mortal Kombat III is already in development, with Slater set to return and continue building out this cinematic universe.
If this trailer is any indication, it’s trying to be the ultimate live-action version of the game fans grew up mastering.
