New Photo From SPIRAL: FROM THE BOOK OF SAW and The Director Wants It to Feel Like David Fincher's SEVEN

It was quite a surprise when we first learned that Chris Rock came up with a Saw story that he wanted to tell. The film is titled Spiral: From The Book of Saw, and Rock stars in the film alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Max Minghella, who play detectives investigating a string of grisly murders by a killer who is targeting cops. These detectives find themselves in “the center of the killer's morbid game.”

We have a new photo from the film to share with you today featuring Rock himself as detective Zeke Banks, and he’s on the trail of a sadistic serial killer. While talking with Empire, Spiral director Darren Lynn Bousman talked about the movie saying that they wanted to make it feel like David Fincher’s Seven.

“Chris came in with a thriller concept. He pitched this very elaborate, dense idea. We wanted it to feel much more like Seven. But it has so many ties to the mythos of Saw.”

Fincher’s Seven may be a crime thriller, but it’s also absolutely terrifying. That movie messed me up when I first saw it. It’s not hard to see the influence of Seven in the trailer for Spiral. Bousman goes on to talk about his previous Saw films and explains that this next film will not rely on the gimmick of gore and violence:

“I was a younger person. Gore and violence was the gimmick, I think. Gore and violent is no longer a gimmick – it just serves the story. This is much more about character, tension and fear.”

Here’s the synopsis for Spiral:

A sadistic mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in Spiral, the terrifying new chapter from the book of Saw. Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel "Zeke" Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner William Schenk (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.

The director also previously shared some additional details about the story saying:

“Chris Rock’s character is dealing with some baggage which I, and many others, will find themselves dealing with. Moreso in a relationship with father and son, with Samuel L. Jackson who plays his dad. We definitely get into stuff like that. And we definitely get into philosophies. I think of the things I love about the Saw franchise in general is the philosophies of what the killer is doing. If you go back and watch what Jigsaw is doing it's a philosophy. He’s trying to teach people to appreciate their life.”

Spiral: From The Book of Saw will be released in theaters on May 21st, 2021.
