Poster Art for STAR WARS: MAUL – SHADOW LORD Teases Darth Maul’s Dark Return
Lucasfilm has unveiled a new poster for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, offering another look at the upcoming animated Disney+ series centered on one of the franchise’s most ruthless villains.
The show is set to premiere on April 6 on Disney+ with its first two episodes. After that, fans will get two episodes each week until the finale lands on May 4, making it a fitting Star Wars Day send-off.
The series dives back into the chaos following the events of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and focuses on Darth Maul as he attempts to rebuild power in a galaxy now dominated by the Empire. Instead of fading into the background after Order 66, Maul is carving out his own path through the criminal underworld.
The series is set “after the events of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, this pulpy adventure finds Maul plotting to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire.
“There, he crosses paths with a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan who could be the apprentice he is seeking to aid him in his relentless pursuit for revenge.”
The recently released trailer hints at the direction of Maul’s next chapter. After surviving the Empire’s purge, the Sith warrior begins plotting revenge against the regime that cast him aside.
His plan involves recruiting a young Jedi Padawan to train as his apprentice, setting up a dangerous mentor-student dynamic that could reshape both of their destinies.
The footage we’ve seen also promises plenty of action, with multiple lightsaber clashes and intense confrontations that feel right at home in the darker corners of Star Wars storytelling.
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord was created by Dave Filoni, continuing the storytelling threads he helped establish in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. Sam Witwer returns once again as the voice of Darth Maul, a role he’s become closely associated with across animated series and games.
The cast around him is packed with talent, including Wagner Moura, Gideon Adlon as Devon Izara, Richard Ayoade as Two-Boots, Dennis Haysbert as Master Eeko-Dio-Daki, Chris Diamantopoulos as Looti Vario, Charlie Bushnell as Rylee Lawson, Vanessa Marshall as Rook Kast, David C. Collins as Spybot, A.J. LoCascio as Marrok, and Steve Blum as Icarus.
Executive producers on the series include Filoni, Athena Yvette Portillo, Matt Michnovetz, Brad Rau, Carrie Beck, Josh Rimes, and Alex Spotswood, with Rau also serving as supervising director.
According to Witwer, the series will show audiences a side of Maul that hasn’t really been explored before: “We learn some different things about this character. He’s got some different traits that you wouldn’t necessarily think he has that make perfect sense from what he’s been through.”
Darth Maul first appeared in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, portrayed physically by Ray Park with the voice provided by Peter Serafinowicz. The character has grown into a fan favorite over the years, largely thanks to his expanded story in animation.
With Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord diving deeper into Maul’s criminal empire and his obsession with revenge, it looks like this series will push the character into darker territory than ever before.
