New Poster for THE OLD GUARD; Charlize Theron Talks About a Crazy Injury She Sustained While Filming

Charlize Theron (Monster, Mad Mad: Fury Road) has another action role under her belt as the character Andromache of Scythia/Andy in the upcoming action fantasy The Old Guard, based on the graphic novel by Greg Rucka. While we know Theron is a total badass and can pull off the grueling task of embodying a strong lead character, it doesn’t come without a price.

In a recent interview with EW, Theron explained how she handled tearing a tendon in her left thumb while shooting the film:

“I definitely cried quite a bit. Everybody kept saying, ‘This is probably serious,’ and I was like, ‘We can’t talk about that right now. We just have to keep going because what are we going to do? We have three more weeks to shoot. We’ve got to get through it.’”

The actress actually went on to finish shooting with the injury, and after wrapping, had to get three surgeries on her arm to repair the damage! She said she was still able to accomplish the flawless fight scenes though, in an effort to pull off the “effortless” look that director Gina Prince-Bythewood was going for. It was easy at first, she explained:

“A lot of my feedback from my trainers was always like, ‘You’re making it look too hard.’ I was like, ‘Because this is really f—ing hard!’”

But they were able to achieve it, and she explained why it was important to the immortal character’s story:

“That was the thing that [Prince-Bythewood] really wanted: for everything for Andy to look effortless, like it’s almost a bore. She’s seen everything, she’s killed everything, she’s been killed by everything.”

That’s pretty amazing! Not only did she finish these scenes that had to look completely effortless, but she did it with a pretty major injury to her hand and arm. It will definitely be awesome to see the finished product when The Old Guard hits Netflix on July 10th.
