New Reasons Revealed on Why Netflix Canceled All of Marvel's Shows
Earlier this week Netflix announced that they had canceled the last of the Marvel shows with Jessica Jones and The Punisher. I’m sure that there are a lot of reasons that Netflix and Marvel cut ties from ratings dropping to Disney+ launching. But there are other reasons that have been revealed thanks to THR.
According to the report, Netflix didn’t actually have any kind of ownership stake in any of the shows that Marvel was producing for them. Instead the deal they made with Marvel had them paying out a steep licensing fee for each season of the shows!
Yeah, that’s not really the best kind of deal to roll with so it totally makes sense that they would want to pull out. I can imagine that Disney also kept raising those licensing fees over time. With those new details being revealed, it completely makes sense that they would want to end that relationship, especially with viewership dropping. It just wasn’t worth it to them.
I imagine they must have made a similar deal with Hulu on their new slate of series. It’s a shame that this is how things ended up playing out, but at the same time there is going to be plenty of Marvel TV goodness coming in the future with Hulu and Disney+. And who knows, maybe one day we will see these shows make a come back!
